If you’re thinking about building a new home, then one question you’ve probably considered at some point is whether you want your house to be one story or two. Each option comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, and it ultimately comes down to the size and style of your home, your floor plan, and your budget.

One of the main advantages of a one story home is that you don’t have to worry about climbing any stairs inside your home. This is especially important as you age and stairs may become more difficult to use. In addition, stairs can pose a hazard for small children and pets. If you’d prefer a two story home but climbing stairs in your future is a concern, you can choose a floor plan where the master bedroom is on the first floor.

If you plan to have a larger home, then a second story is a good idea to give you more square footage. Many floor plans with two stories feature the family living space on the first floor with rooms like the kitchen, dining room, living room, and home office. Then, the second story is where most, if not all, of the bedrooms are. This allows you to entertain guests while your children sleep upstairs, or for you to stay up late watching movies without keeping the rest of the family awake.

Another deciding factor for one story or two could be the architectural style of your home. Some people really have a certain style of home in mind, like a ranch-style home, which is one story, or a Victorian-style home, which is two. If your heart is set on a certain style of home, then that may be the way you choose between one story and two for your home.

If you have any questions about the differences between one story homes and two story homes, we’re happy to answer all of your questions and discuss your options with you for your new home. So, give us a call at Biggs Construction in Greenville, NC.
